NSA data reportedly left unsecured on Amazon server

More than 100 gigabytes of information belonging to some branch of this National Security Agency (NSA) were abandoned online in an unsecured Amazon Web Services server, according to a new report.

ZDNet reports that the virtual disk image was abandoned on the host, with no password, and available for anybody to download.

The unsecured information was discovered by cybersecurity company UpGuard in October, along with the host was closed down, according to the news outlet.

The digital disk picture showed part of a host which was linked to some cloud-based intelligence project named Red Disk. The program was designed to permit troops all over the world to upgrade and exchange information in real time, as stated by the New York Post. The data showed ldquo a &;snap” of a hard disk dating back to May 2013, according to the news outlet.

The program would reveal drone footage, categorized reports, satellite imagery, and intercepts, ZDNet reports, and could be accessible by soldiers with tablets or laptops while on the floor. Red Disk was never deployed from the battlefield and cost almost $1 billion.

The information on the unprotected server contained private keys to access servers throughout the intelligence community.

Last week, the New York Times reported that the NSA’s cyberweapons were being used against them by a group known as the Shadow Brokers. An investigation was taking place to see whether the NSA was murdered or someone leaked the information.
