‘France organised this’: Macron denounces state role in Holocaust atrocity

Talking during a visit by the Israeli prime minister, Frenh president dismisses Much right claims Which the Vichy regime didnt represent France

French President Emmanuel Macron has denounced Frances collaboration from the Holocaust, lashing out at people that negate or negate the countrys role in sending thousands of Jews to their deaths.

Later he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended a Holocaust commemoration, Macron also appealed for revived Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Worried that Netanyahu is backing away from commitment to a two-state solution, Macron assailed Jewish settlement construction as a danger to global hopes for peace.

Commemorating 75 years because a mass roundup of Jews during the darkest chapter of contemporary French history, Macron insisted that it was indeed France that organised this.

Holocaust survivors recounted wrenching stories at the ceremony at the website of Vel dHiv scene out Paris, where police herded some 13,000 people on July 16-17, 1942 until they had been deported to camps. Over 4,000 were kids. Fewer than 100 survived.

They were among some 76,000 Jews deported from France to Nazi camps.

Macron dismissed arguments by French right leaders and others that the collaborationist Vichy regime didnt represent France.

French Jewish leaders hailed Macrons address on Sunday as critics railed at him online, at which revived anti-Semitism has flourished. Macron vowed to battle such racism, also called for thorough investigation into the killing of a Parisian woman believed connected to anti-Jewish opinion.

Netanyahu said that lately we have seen a rise in extremist forces which seek to destroy not only the Jews, but needless to say the Jewish nation also, but well beyond that. … The zealots of militant Islam, that try to destroy you, try to destroy us as well. We have to stand against them collectively.

Pro-Palestinian and other activists protested Netanyahus look in Paris, criticizing Jewish settlement policy and the blockade of Gaza.

Macron condemned an attack last week which killed two Israeli police officers at a Jerusalem shrine revered by Jews and Muslims, also stated he is committed to Israels safety but cautioned that continuing Jewish settlement arrangement threatens peace attempts.

I call for a resumption of discussions between Israel and the Palestinians in the framework of this hunt for a solution of two nations, Israel and Palestine, living in established, secure borders with Jerusalem as the capital, Macron told reporters.

In his side, Netanyahu stated, We share the identical desire for a peaceful Middle East, but didnt elaborate on eventual peace talks.

While Macron was flexing his diplomatic abilities with outreach to President Donald Trump and others, he didnt indicate any eagerness to get France to spearhead these discussions, after a lackluster French Mideast diplomatic attempt underneath his predecessor early this year.

Macron and Netanyahu also spoke battling extremism in Syria and everywhere and enhancing economic alliance.
