Facebook outage hits users worldwide

Facebook went down for a large number of users Wednesday. Instagram, that is owned and run by Facebook, was disrupted too.

Users of the social media platforms started reporting problems round 11:11 a.m. ET, and the outage got worse. Users affected on both mobile and desktop.

Multiple providers, like Down Detector and Outage Report, had elevated numbers of users reporting on the problems.      

Outage Report’s map emphasized the East and West coasts of the U.S. and Europe since the most affected Regions of the outage.

Services tied to Facebook, like SocialFlow, reported problems with the system’s publishing API.  

A lot of those still had problems, although some users could get the Facebook News Feed through the outage. Facebook’s Platform Status webpage was reporting healthy operations for the first few hours of the outage. But, Facebook’s developers website (also in the facebook.com domain) also went down and was not accessible for a period following 12 p.m. ET.

The webpage started to admit “Degraded Performance” soon after 1 p.m. ET.  

A number of users also experienced difficulties . The problem was not as widespread as the Facebook outage, however, Outage Report’s amounts spiked temporarily for IG, also.

The internet turned to Twitter to vent its frustration that was collective in Facebook.

Others have been relieved to be freed in their media shackles.

The memes were strong.

“We’re mindful that some people are now having difficulty accessing Facebook and Instagram,” a Facebook spokesperson told Mashable in an emailed statement. “We’re working to get things back to normal as fast as possible. ” 

The Facebook Team posted an update on its developers page about the investigation into the buggy API performance at 12:18 p.m. EST, which it later updated to “Ongoing” shortly after 1 p.m.

UPDATE: Oct. 11, 2017, 2:36 p.m. EDT Facebook representatives told me that most issues had been solved at 2:35 p.m. ET and supplied an updated statement: 

Earlier today, a networking issue caused some people to have difficulty accessing Facebook services. We quickly investigated and began restoring access within about an hour, and we have fixed the problem for everybody. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.”
